Termites can be pretty difficult to spot somehow, as they can be hiding within wooden materials.\u00a0\u00a0Subterranean termites,\u00a0the most\u00a0common termite species,\u00a0love to chew wood from inside out and you won’t be able to see their handiwork until the massive damage has risen to the surface.\u00a0 To protect your home against damage by termites, it is important to learn and look for\u00a0the signs that\u00a0can tell\u00a0whether you have termite infestation in your property.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>(i) Identification of termite wings<\/p>\n

Termites have straight and beaded antennae on their heads, and these flying white ants have\u00a02 sets of wings that\u00a0are almost the same size.\u00a0 Termites often shed wings, and, if you find these discarded wings, be prepared to enlist the help of a termite control specialist in no time.\u00a0 Termites live in humid\u00a0environment and you can easily look for their wings in\u00a0damp\u00a0areas.<\/p>\n

(ii) Termite shelter tubes<\/p>\n

Termites are fragile insects.\u00a0 Whenever they are not inside the wood or under the soil, they build tubes as safe passageways and tunnels which are dark brown in color and\u00a0made of cellulose and mud in order to protect themselves; they also use these tubes for foraging of food.\u00a0 If you find such tubes, say,\u00a0on the walls or around water pipes, make sure that they are fresh ones and not\u00a0some past, old trails.\u00a0 To distinguish them, remove a small section of a tube and wait for\u00a0a few\u00a0days to see if there is any termite coming to repair the broken gap of the tube; this is the only way to prove whether you have an existing termite problem at hand.<\/p>\n

(iii) Termite cement<\/p>\n

Check to see if there are any\u00a0cracks or fissures that are filled with unnatural wizened mud in your house, because these\u00a0holes were sealed up by termites with the purpose of reducing airflow and maintaining the humidity inside the cracks.<\/p>\n

(iv) Damaged wood<\/p>\n

Tap on\u00a0a\u00a0wall or\u00a0wooden structure to\u00a0hear and\u00a0feel\u00a0if it’s hollow inside.\u00a0 If it is, that means the inside of the wall or wooden structure had already been chewed up by termites, thus confirming their presence.\u00a0 Through visual inspection, the affected wall or wooden structure will appear striated or ridged.<\/p>\n
