\"\"<\/a>Fire ants are a major nuisance to both humans and animals.\u00a0 Not only do they inflict one of the most painful stings in flesh, the pain is highly intolerable and seemingly everlasting; well, once bitten, some people will have to suffer the burning “sensation” for weeks.<\/p>\n

There are some ways you can use to minimize your fire ant problem or hopefully eliminate them for good.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>(i) Bucket them<\/p>\n

First, you’ll have to identify their nest.\u00a0 Once you’ve spotted it, dig up the mound swiftly and dump it into a bucket.\u00a0 Cover the mound with some baby powder or cornstarch in the bucket to prevent the fire ants from climbing out.\u00a0 Lastly, fill the bucket with water mixed with some dish soap to drown them; the purpose of the dish soap is to break the surface tension so that the ants can be drowned faster.\u00a0 Anyway, you will have to leave your handiwork overnight to see the result.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>(ii) Give these fire buggers a hot bath<\/p>\n

Pour hot water directly onto the mound (their colony), this is the most straightforward method.\u00a0 You will have to do this 3 to 4 times, with each application requiring 3 or 4 gallons of hot water.\u00a0 Be careful when using this approach, for hot water can kill the grass and injure your skin.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>(iii) Dry them up with diatomite<\/p>\n

This miracle earth known as diatomaceous earth can dehydrate the fire ants and consequently bring about their demise.\u00a0 This approach is not so practical because, if you simply pour the earth onto them, they can escape.\u00a0 The only way is to bag them up and fill the bag with this earth.<\/p>\n

(iv) Use steam injectors.\u00a0 Like hot water, they can destroy grass and shrubbery.<\/p>\n

(v) Enlist the help of a professional pest controller.<\/p>\n
